However, numerous households, within the pioneer tradition, loaded their youngsters and belongings in a wagon and headed towards the unknown west. Clarksville, Bonham and Dallas newspapers reported how many wagons passed via every day and how many had been camped on the “jockey yards” waiting to find a place to settle. Some of those had offered farms and had cash to buy land, but most of those immigrants turned tenant farmers and worked on shares. Towns along the best way, such as Baxter Springs, the primary cow town in Kansas, developed to handle the seasonal workers and tens of hundreds of head of cattle being pushed.
