Water Damage to Your Roof
Roofing damage will sprout up from time to time. Depending on what climate you live in, there are a variety of solutions you can implement to keep your home safe. Here are some of Rose Remodeling our strategies to identify water damage on your roof early, keep it from spreading to other issues, and how to slow it down in the future.
Causes of Water Damage
Poor Pipe Installation
Your pipes are often the primary culprit over weather or another factor. When pipes have rusted and become weak, they’ll start to crack and leave openings that water can drip through. Even in the smallest leaks, significant damage can occur.
Weak Gutters
Your gutters play a role as well. When gutters aren’t properly carrying your water away from your property and draining, you’re going to have major weak spots in your roof. These weak spots sprout leaks, cause ceiling damage, and eventually will start to give way to the weight of the water buildup. Make sure you don’t leave these unattended to once you identify them. Even a weekend out on the roof fixing it up yourself can be good enough attention to keep your drainage consistent.
Missing/Cracked Shingles
Shingles will crack, and similar to a chink in the armor, this one weak point may end up making all the difference. Luckily, this is a quick fix you can perform yourself as well. Find the supplier of your home’s shingles and patch the missing spot accordingly.
However, if there are huge gaps or several shingles missing, professional assistance is recommended. This is more so to find the root of the issue that an expert eye will be able to identify.
Skylights
Similar to piping, these have to be installed properly to avoid damage. A skylight that doesn’t fit into its frame will instantly have water damage become an issue. Make sure that if there are leaks coming from these pieces of your home and they’ve sprouted into other problems, you’re handling them accordingly. Rotting wood is something you can replace quickly, but a whole roof isn’t.
Avoiding Water Damage in the Future
Shut Off Your Water
Once you shut off your water, you can find where the exact point of issue is within your piping, rain drainage, and more. If you are choosing to take matters into your own hands instead of hiring an expert, be sure to lookout for mold. Wearing gloves and proper skin protection is an absolute priority.
Clean Debris
Get rid of all the pieces of any neighboring trees that have fallen down and become problematic for your property. Even just one branch laying in a gutter can completely clog and harm water drainage.
Conduct Inspections
Inspections are a great way to have peace of mind and stay current with any water damage that’s been sustained on your property. While it’s possible to conduct on your own, an expert opinion is who you should seek out.
