The 1980s savings and mortgage disaster knocked out that bank, and a 2008 merger pressured out its successor. The crime ultimately led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. The scandal stemmed from the Nixon administration’s continual attempts to cover up its involvement in the June 17, 1972, illegal entry into the Democratic National Committee headquarters on the Watergate Office Building.
